Android Phone

I purchased my HTC 4G with T-Mobile service for international travel use. Someone mentioned I may experience excessive roaming charges even if I don't use the phone while overseas. Apps might be running even when not in use (email, weather, GPS). I was told to remove the battery. But if I do this, I cannot use the phone to receive or make calls. Is there any remedy to this?
