Top Four BlackBerry Problems and How To Fix Them
1. The BlackBerry screen is frozen.
This problem happens on pretty much any computer-related device. Something happens and you suddenly can't scroll up or down, or click on anything. It's annoying, but there are actually two ways to fix it. You can perform a soft reset, which is done by pressing the ALT + CAP + DELETE keys on your handheld at the same time. If this doesn't work, perform a hard reset. This is done by finding the RESET button at the back of the handheld. Sometimes, this button might be near the bottom, under the battery cover. Press the RESET button using a pin or paper clip. With either method, you shouldn't lose any data.
2. The BlackBerry doesn't send or receive email messages.
This problem could be due to the lack of GPRS service. GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Service, and it's what allows your device to access data. The first thing you should do is perform a soft reset. If that doesn't work, perform a hard reset. After both resets, check your wireless antenna signal strength. The antenna should show GPRS. If you can still make phone calls and access the Web, then your GSM service is still available. Try sending yourself an email ??" does it work? If it doesn't, call your BlackBerry provider. Sometimes, your service could be delayed due to a billing problem or to downtime on the network.
3. The BlackBerry won't synchronize properly.
When you have push email, there's nothing more annoying than seeing messages you've already read still in your inbox after you've deleted them. Sometimes, BlackBerry users find that this problem happens, and there's a number of causes as to why. This page from BlackBerry.com explains the causes and how to fix them.
4. The BlackBerry has backlight or screen delay problems.
Several people on some common BlackBerry forums have mentioned that their device is having backlight problems. These run the gamut from being unable to see the backlight at all to the screen delay flashing off too soon. Depending on which model you have, you can go into your Options or Preferences and select Screen/Keyboard. Here, you can adjust the backlight settings to your preferences. You will want to set the Backlight Timeout to your preferred time setting. This should extend the screen delay and stop it from coming on too soon. Users have reported that this often works, especially if you have an erratic or weak backlight. If this doesn't work, you can install BB Light, a freeware program that users have found to make their backlight settings more accessible.

I am using an iPhone currently but it does not support scanners. I have Windows XP and OSX on my MacBook Pro, but don't generally have it for daily use. I am not a big PC or Windows enthusiast as I've been on Apple-based hardware for 25 years, so this will be a big transition for me.

Rumor Touch $105 new
Black Berry Curve 8530 $140new
They both have 2MP pic/camcorder, no flash, 3g, mp3 with built-in storage, gps, and stream youtube
Can someone who knows how to interpret processor speeds and all that other techinal stuff that I don't understand please tell me which of these phones I'd be better off with. I don't really need more than the stuff I listed both phones having. I guess both having 3g means same internet speeds? What is a better processor speed etc that you might be able to interpret from a spec list good for?- better/faster games, graphics, screen resolution? One other thing, I don't care about battery life or built-in speakers.

1. The current Palm Desktop at palm.com runs fine on Windows 7 32 bit and 64 bit.

have i broken my MacBook Pro?
I'm hoping someone can offer some advice.
I was just editing something on Photoshop and a message popped up saying that my startup disk was almost full which I thought was impossible since it had 240GB free y'day.
So, I did an Omnidisk Sweep and it turned out that Photshop had been saving 64GB versions of my projects in a file called something like PRIVATE/VAR so I just deleted the whole 'Private' file.
And now, I can't get it to startup.
I restarted the Mac and it is just stuck on the Apple Startup screen with the swirly thing.
Not even booted up Snow Leopard.
Yikes.
I looked on the finder thing before I deleted it and it was just full of mumbo jumbo and there was a file below with all the things like 'Users' so didn't delete them.
I wonder if I've somehow deleted the OS startup file? Anyone got any ideas?
I am wary of doing a time machine restore as it's been a while since my last one.

When does an iPhone become locked?
Hi
Do iPhones come locked to a network or does the lock happen when you activate the phone?
I bought an iPhone on eBay its new and still wrapped in the plastic.
The seller advised that it was locked to Orange and was an unwanted upgrade.
If I put a T-Mobile sim in the phone and then try and activate the handset, firstly will it work? and secondly will the handset at that point become locked to T-Mobile?

GPS/A-GPS advice needed
Bit of a noob to the idea of having GPS on a phone and tbh the more I have read about GPS/A-GPS the more confuddled I've got
Basically I want a phone that will work without needing to access the internet for the satnav software to work so thats either one where the maps come on a CD or Memory card, or where they can be downloaded once onto the phone and not in a piecemeal format
Obviously I would like voice prompted turn by turn and route planning and the feature or option of speed camera warnings
And I would like the satnav software to be able to continue working even if there isnt any form of phone network coverage which I am not sure the A-GPS system is capable of as it always waffles on about downloading things
The three phones I quite like at the moment are the nokia C5, 6700 and X6 (16GB) but all they go on about is ovi maps, and call me paranoid, but I'm extremely suspicious of a company like nokia claiming to be giving anything away for free and suspect it will turn out to be expensive to use with constant map updates over the mobile network or similar
So any advice on recommended combinations of phone/software or software that would work well on either of those phones or even tips on what NOT to look at
Many thanks in advance

Whichever option, I choose, it runs the XP startup, then stops and will go no further.

Powermat introduce inductive batteries
Powermat will be introducing replacement batteries that can be charged inductively without the need for replacement cases or backplates.
Devices from HTC, Blackberry, Nokia, LG, Samsung, Motorola and Sony Ericsson will be supported - I've read the N97 from Nokia will get a battery, I do hope they will support the N900 as a little Powermat will do me very nicely (plus I've hated the micro-USB charging socket since it was introduced on the N85).
Is inductive charging about to hit the big time?
General MP3 Problem
Just thought I would see if anyone has any thoughts on this rather odd probelm I am having with quite a few MP3 files.
Started playing a few film soundtracks and classical music pieces that I ripped a few years ago (at the maximum bitrate), but as I am going through certain ones, some have developed what I can only describe as a distortion.
I noticed it at first on tracks where a piano is the lead instrument, these tracks used to play fine, but now sound like they are being played full blast out of tinny speakers, regardless of how they are played (iPod, speaker system, macbook speakers).
I've re-ripped one of the cds and the problem is no longer an issue for those tracks, but I am more concerned with what has actually caused this in the first place (obviously don't want to end up re-ripping 9000 cd singles and albums ).
Can digital files degrade over time?

Verizon rumoured to be replacing Google with Bing on all Android devices
http://www.minyanville.com/businessm.../2010/id/30006
Quote:
That means no seamless integration with Gmail.
No Google Latitude.
No multitouch in the map app, either.
And in place of the free and fantastic turn-by-turn Google Navigator app, Verizon installed its VZ Navigator service - a feature which costs $10 a month to use.
It would be one thing for Verizon to set the default search and map app to Bing with the option to switch back to Google.
But it’s utterly inexcusable for Verizon to destroy the possibility of a switch without the user having to root the device and, under Verizon’s company policies, void their warranty.
And on top of that, repeatedly charge you for a sub-par service instead of keeping the gold standard of navigation apps for free.
And as bad as that is, there’s now a rumor that Verizon will be doing this again.
On every single one of its Android devices.
After speaking with a Verizon representative about the Bing debacle on the Fascinate - who also lied about the existence of a search alternative - The Droid Guy contacted two Verizon tipsters who told him that the carrier ;is dropping the Google Search from all future Android Devices and offering Bing in it’s [sic] place.;
Google revenue from Android comes directly from search and subsequent ad impressions (plus in-app ads) and of course a slice of app revenue.
If carriers start switching search engines, even app stores, in an attempt to create their own revenue stream this hits Google directly in the pocket, it eliminates the entire reason that Google created Android.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if Microsoft were paying Verizon a fee to switch to Bing, just as Google pay Apple to keep Google as the default search engine on iPhone (estimated between $5 and $10 per iPhone).
What will happen if this approach becomes more widespread? Amazon may be looking to launch their own device, with it's own app store...
maybe it will use Bing too?
Another view here of Verizons bone headed attitude:
Quote:
Regardless of motivations, the restriction if broadly applied would have Verizon reneging on its pledge to support the openness of Android and reflects a wider trend of the OS being artificially restricted by carriers.
Most US providers are disabling Android 2.2′s tethering support in favor of their own, and AT&T has banned non-Market Android apps under the pretext of security.
The moves paradoxically leave Apple’s iPhone more open in some areas, as its users can choose Google, Bing or Yahoo for search and don’t have first-party apps deliberately hidden or broken.
Are Google losing control? Is this a one-off with Verizon, or the beginning of a new trend among carriers?
It's obvious why Jobs maintains such an iron grip when carriers such as Verizon are dicking around to this extent.

Why's the development of symbian so slow?
so it's been 5 days since i stopped using my 3.5year old n95 and switched to the n8, i kept using my n95 for so long as it did everything i wanted and now i've updated my hardware i'm puzzled as to why its taken symbian so long to get to where it is now.
why they just haven't been concentrating on s^4 instead of working on S^2 & 3 is puzzling.
considering how much time has passed since s60v3 i expected a little more.
its fully understandable why nokia have stopped calling symbian devices flagship.
i bet symbian was fuming with that announcement, but although its not a bad OS, its not up with the competition.
symbian has a lot of members, i wonder if its this that's hindering the progression.
i see quite a few networks as members and i imagine what they wan't from the OS is in conflict with what the developer community and end users want.
could resolving differences be what's holding back the innovation?
the n8 hardware is great but apart from the hi-res camera, xenon flash and fm transmitter, (all hardware features) theirs not much to rave about compared to my old n95.

Milestone 3G?
Hi everyone,
Im not the hottest when it comes to mobile phones, but the other day I got a motorola milestone.
I really love the phone and think its really great, but I cannot find how to turn off the 3g and just use the wifi.
Is this even possible? What it is, I have a limit with vodafone about the about of mb that I can use, and I dont want to get charged for going over this.
I want to be able to use the 3g when im out and about, but when im at home at there is wifi I would rather use that as its free.
So how do I turn it off? Or is it just the case that its always on and the mb usage only counts when I go on the internet?
Sorry if this seems a bit simple,
Thanks in advance

Dell seven incher launching in "a few weeks"
Quotes from Dell Greater China President Amit Midha in the Wall Street Journal
Quote:
;It was showed off at Oracle World by Michael last week and we'll be launching very, very soon—within the next few weeks,; Mr.
Midha said in an interview.
He said Dell will launch ;a whole slew; of new products in the next 6-12 months, including additional three-inch, four-inch and 10-inch devices.
;In fact, very much in the near future we'll be launching the seven-inch tablet as well as the additional three-inch product,; he said.

LG KM900 Arena
Hmm, Touch screen mania!!
http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_km900_are...y-news-769.php
Check out the new LG as quoted by GSM Arena:
;Today is a great day for touchscreen lovers.
After Toshiba announced their WinMo-powered multimedia monster, it's now LG prime time.
A photo of the high-end touchscreen phone LG KM900 Arena leaked online.
The handset features a high quality touch display with a new innovative 3D user interface boldly named ;S-Class;.
LG KM900 Arena (kindly named after our website, thanks LG!) appeared on a phone retailer brochure in the Netherlands.
As you can see its metallic design is quite similar to the Samsung i900 Omnia.
However, the new device is more compact than the Omnia and runs on a new UI, called S-Class, which bears some resemblance to the Apple iPhone's.
Whether or not it will also have a capacitive touchscreen and multi-touch support is yet unknown.
LG KM900 Arena features a 5 megapixel camera with DVD quality video recording capabilities (don't you just love LG current D1 video?) and DivX playback (much appreciated!).
The rich connectivity options include Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi.
However we will have to wait for the official announcement (probably at the MWC 2009) before drawing any conclusions.
Stay tuned and we will update you as soon as we get more info.;

Changing network; not handset
Hi group,
I'm thinking of changing networks, whilst keeping my existing, unlocked, BlackBerry 9700.
I'm wondering if this will just be a simple SIM swap when the relevant contracts are stopped/started? I know I may need to tell the old network (Vodafone) to let go of my BB PIN and give it to the new network (Orange).
But what about e-mail? Will that automatically get delivered to my phone on the new network?
Any help appreciated - thanks!
anyone bought an HD7 yet ?
just wondering what first impressions are, and if they are as good as they look

Yeah, that does look surprisingly quick.
Will be interesting to see if they manage to keep that speedyness when WindowsPhone 7 phones are actually released.

Does anyone know what the specs are for the new Arena Max and whether they have fixed the issues that bugged the original Arena?

HP Buys Palm (was: Palm Up For Sale?)
Rumours that Palm are inviting offers for the company
;April 12 (Bloomberg) -- Palm Inc., creator of the Pre smartphone, put itself up for sale and is seeking bids for the company as early as this week, according to three people familiar with the situation.
The company is working with Goldman Sachs Group Inc.
and Frank Quattrone’s Qatalyst Partners to find a buyer, said the people, who declined to be identified because the sale isn’t public.
Taiwan’s HTC Corp.
and China’s Lenovo Group Ltd.
have looked at the company and may make offers, said the people.

Who will buy a Palm Pre?
Hi
I don't really expect the Palm Pre to be a perfect phone and I ;don't; want one on contract.
However I can feel it in my water that I will want to buy one most likely via eBay as soon as I can.
Just to try it with my O2 sim.
Anyone else feel the same?
Its a bit like buying a BB Storm.
Not a great handset and in my view went on sale way to soon, but I had to get one just to see what the user experience was like.

I'm still reading through Engadgets live blog of the Palm keynote but just thought i'd throw this up
Edit blog of the keynote http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/08/l...ss-conference/ reading it (bottom up) you can really tell that an ex-apple guy is now at palm, it really does come across very apple keynote like.
Palm Eos (next Web OS phone)

This one looks like a non-touch screen phone and an interesting competitor to the likes of the BB Bold and the Nokia E71.
I wonder how well the web OS works on a non-touch screen phone!
